Rabbits are
the third most popular pet and their popularity is gaining rapidly—especially as
house pets.
Sarah has a
keen interest and wealth of experience in both rabbits and guinea pigs and can offer advice on the
following:
-
diet
and nutrition
-
housing
and bedding
-
environmental enrichment
-
behaviour
-
neutering
-
nail
clipping

They do however suffer from a number of problems and their
natural protective instincts mean that they don’t show clinical signs until they
are very poorly.
Among the problems to be aware of are:
-
Myxomatosis: an increasing problem again but regular vaccinations can be
very effective
-
Haemorrhagic Viral Disease: although not as common as myxomatosis, this can
cause very sudden death, so regular vaccination should be carried out
-
Teeth: rabbits teeth are constantly growing and it is
important that they are constantly grinding their food.
Therefore they need access to grass and / or
good quality hay/roughage at all times.
Some rabbits need regular dental check ups /
treatment despite this
-
Fly Strike: messy rear ends can result in flies laying
their eggs which in turn develop into flesh eating maggots.
This may lead to a painful death if not rapidly
treated.
Daily inspection and use of proprietary
treatments, available at the surgery, can
prevent this.
