Poisonous Foods for Dogs and Cats

There are many human foods / substances that are poisonous to dogs.  These include the following:

 

Alcohol

Adder bites

Ant powders, baits & gels

Anti-freeze (ethylene glycol)

Antihistamines

Apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning)

Baby Food (can contain onion powder) Citrus oil

Broccoli (in large amounts)

Batteries

Chocolate (contains Theobromine)

Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco

Cocoa powder

Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)

Conkers (horse chestnuts)

Daffodil bulbs (and flowers)

Fat trimmings (can cause pancreatitis)

Holly berries

Hops (used in home brewing)

Human vitamins containing iron

Laburnum

Large amounts of liver

Macadamia Nuts/Walnuts

Mouldy/spoiled foods

Mushrooms

Nutmeg

Onions & garlic

Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots,

Raw fish

Raw Potatoes, potato peelings and green looking potatoes

Raisins and grapes (damages the kidneys)

Rat poison (wafrin)

Rhubarb leaves

Slug pellets (metaldehyde)

Toads

Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)

Turkey skin

Voltarin (in arthritis medication)

Xylitol found in sugar free chewing gum, nicotine replacement gum, sugar substitutes in baking, some human and veterinary medications

Yeast dough

Cats:

Cats are usually very sensible creatures when it comes to eating things that are not good for them  However, they like to keep scrupulously clean and will groom off anything that is on their coats or paws, which shouldn't be there.  so if they walk through or rub up against something, they may swallow it during grooming.

They also have a tendency to nibble at grass outside and if they don't have access to this or are simply inquisitive, they may chew indoor plants or cut flowers.

Anti-freeze (ethylene glycol) - found in car screen washes & de-icers

Certain flea products - never us dog products on cats

Decorating materials - petroleum distillates found in solvents for paints, glass cleaners, white spirit, wood preservatives e.g. creosote

Lillies

Paracetamol

Poinsettia

Slug bait - metaldehyde

Tobacco
