Squiggle 2 was admitted for a caesarean
section operation. Her pelvic bones had fused making it impossible
for her to deliver her piglets naturally.

The initial incision is made

One piglet or pup as they are sometimes known, can be seen
within a uterine horn - an incision is made and the piglet is them removed and
the umbilical cord clamped with an artery forcep.

It is important that the afterbirth / placenta is removed
along with the piglet

After the operation, Mum and baby were placed in
our incubator to enable us to monitor their recovery and to
maintain their body temperatures at a suitable level.

Phillippa initially hand feeds the baby guinea
pig every 15 minutes on a mixture of a specially formulated
guinea pig recovery food and milk. Squiggly 2 was
given an injection to stimulate her milk production so that her
piglet can feed from her when she is fully round from the
anaesthetic.
