Pet Heroes 2009

Each month we vote for one of our patients who has shown courage and patience when faced with difficult, painful or long term treatment.

February 2009

Duke, a ten month old Bernese Mountain Dog, was found to have eaten over half a kilogram of grapes.  As soon as his owners realised what had happened they telephoned the surgery for advice.

They say curiosity killed the cat but Duke is very lucky to be alive!!  Probably not so much as curiosity as greed caused him to eat the grapes as Duke has a habit of taking food off the kitchen worktops.  Did you know that these are poisonous to dogs?  Well it can take only 7 grapes to kill a dog!

On admission to the surgery, Duke was given an injection to make him sick.  He was administered intravenous fluid therapy and after being sick, given charcoal granules to line his stomach.  He was kept in overnight so we could monitor his vital signs and to administer continuous fluid therapy.   Blood tests were taken to monitor his renal function as grape toxicity can cause kidney problems.

Fortunately, Duke was seen in time and apart from needing to check his calcium levels, he has made a full recovery.

If you suspect your pet of eating something poisonous, telephone the surgery straight away.  Depending on the type of poison and when it was ingested, it may not be appropriate to make the patient sick.  Professional advice is essential and we have access to a veterinary poisons bureau should we need to seek further advice.

Butter wouldn't melt in his mouth would it!?

Well just about anything would as Duke is always on the look out for food

There are many human foods that are poisonous to cats and dogs.
