Fireworks

With Bonfire night and Halloween fast approaching it is important to remember your pets and how frightening loud bangs and flashing lights can be.

It isn't just cats and dogs that are affected - make sure your rabbits and guinea pigs are not left outside: bring them into the house if possible.

There are several remedies that may be suitable for your pet but some need to be started a week or more before fireworks are being let off.  Unfortunately fireworks can go on for several weeks so you need to be prepared!

The two products below contain a synthetic version of pheromones which are produced naturally; by a bitch as an appeasing pheromone to comfort her puppies and help them cope with new stimuli and by cats who use this facial pheromone to mark objects in their environment when they feel safe and secure.

Both products need to be plugged in and remain turned on within the room your dog or cat rests in a least one week before needed.  Their aim is to have a relaxing effect on dogs and to increase the sense of familiarity and security in cats thereby reducing fearful reactions to loud noises.

In addition we sell homeopathic remedies which are also designed to help your pet cope with loud noises.

Suggestions for the day of the event:

  • check all pets are inside the house

  • Prevent them using cat flaps etc.

  • Draw the curtains

  • Play music which has a constant beat to drown out the sounds outside

  • Television may have programs with fireworks on so avoid leaving your pet shut in a room with the TV on

  • Let your cat hide where he chooses and feels safe

  • Be interactive with your dog but do not fuss, reassure or punish him as this confirms that the noises are to be afraid of

  • If you dog wants to take refuge or hide somewhere allow him to do so

Cats and dogs may run off so make sure your pet is micro chipped so he can be returned to you

If you wish to discuss how to look after you pet during fireworks please either pop into reception or telephone to make an appointment to see Jill
